During flowering, philodendrons produce certain resins that are valuable to a type of stingless bee in the genus Trigona, which uses the resins to build their nests. South American natives in turn harvest the resins from the bees’ nests to use as a sealant to make their blowguns airtight. Blowguns are a common hunting weapon among rainforest tribes and they can be extremely effective with practice, as this short clip shows:
