Bamboo is used to make clothing and other fabrics; however, companies often use strong chemical solvents to break the stems down into a semi-synthetic viscose, similar to how rayon is produced. Bamboo viscose can be made with only water and mechanical roughing, but this process is more costly for producers than the chemical method. Hopefully conscious consumers will drive demand more towards the water-based processing, even if it means paying a little more.
