Ptychosperma elegans

solitaire palm

A fifteen foot tall specimen of solitaire palm, Ptychosperma elegans, looking much like a lollipop amongst other garden plants near the entrance to The Botanic Gardens at Kona Kai Resort in Key Largo, Florida

This palm has an elegantly slim trunk that adds to its beauty and distinctiveness but also makes it more susceptible to wind damage when it reaches its mature height of about thirty feet. It is relatively maintenance free but requires supplemental watering in drier periods.
