Musa velutina

pink banana

Two young pink banana plants, Musa velutina, growing in a courtyard garden bed at The Botanic Gardens at Kona Kai Resort in Key Largo, Florida

This banana has beautiful, edible pink fruits that are sweet but contain many seeds because this plant has not been bred to be seedless like most commercial bananas. Hardy up north to Zone 8, this plant, like other bananas, prefers a good amount of moisture in the soil to maintain the water pressure necessary to support its herbaceous stem.
