Harrisia fragrans

fragrant prickly-apple cactus

A slender two foot tall stem of a fragrant prickly apple cactus, Harrisia fragrans, planted by the fence around the pool at The Botanic Gardens at Kona Kai Resort in Key Largo, Florida

Cacti are known for their large, showy flowers and this plant is no exception - the fragrant tubular flowers bloom at night and can be up to seven and a half inches long. The fruit is also edible. This is a rare Florida Keys species because much of its habitat has been destroyed for development. If you get your hands on a specimen for the landscape, it prefers part shade, as it is an understory plant in its habitat.
